Canyoneering (or canyoning) in in the Lost Canyon, Arenal Costa Rica is a wonderful experience. Imagine yourself in surrounded by lush rainforest atop a magical canyon waiting to rappel down some jungle waterfalls! Near the Arenal Volcano, our rugged, mountainous terrain is ideal for incredible canyoneering options & huge, breathtaking waterfalls! We combine rappelling, down-climbing and river tracing in a deep, tropical canyon.
So what is canyoneering? No experience needed - just a good sense of adventure! Canyoneering is a mixture of abseiling down waterfalls and hiking in a jungle filled canyon. To start the tour: Travel the old-fashion way! Start off by doing a fun 4x4 off-road adventure as you climb about 15 minutes up into a quiet mountainside community. Prepare to get wet! Your guides will give you a thorough safety talk to explain important rappelling and down-climbing techniques. You will be provided high-quality technical climbing gear such as a harness, helmet & gloves.
Prepare to get wet as the guides aassist you as you make your way down amazing rappels! Take a deep breath! You’ll rappel down 150-ft waterfalls for the thrill of a lifetime! Make your way along the river bed by down-climbing and rappelling a series of six waterfalls that get gradually bigger and… BIGGER!
Save the best for last! The biggest and most-exciting waterfall is your last descent… you’ll finish with a 200ft-guided-rappel at the end!
The hike back up takes about 10 minutes, but take your time to enjoy the intense rainforest that surrounds you! At the top, you’ll arrive to our Canyon House where you can change into your dry clothes and then sit down to your best meal in Costa Rica!

The Lost Canyon is full of tropical waterfalls with surprises each step of the way. This awesome canyon is located a short distance from the town of La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Desafio Adventure Company, provides round trip transportation for most of the hotels in La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano area.. A home cooked Costa Rican typical lunch is also included. Our canyon is a spectacular site to explore. The sounds of flowing water, waterfalls, tropical plants and massive trees. A magnificent experience for all the senses.

Adventure for Kids (canyoneering etc)
Our personal feeling is that canyoneering, in general, is definitely NOT for kids -- especially in Costa Rica.
Canyons are located in an area of a lot of liability (landslides, rock falls, serpents, insects, flash floods, etc.) -- in fact, we try to discourage parents from taking their young kids on our canyoneering tour.
We know other companies allow youngsters, but for us, 13 years to 55 is the best age group for ANY canyon in Costa Rica.
ICT/INS approve the sport for this age-range and canyoneering operators are allowed to make exceptions for as low as 10 yrs with an extra guide per child.
We still don't recommend it (although some families/agencies insist.) In our opinion, companies are at fault for not stressing the dangers of the sport for small children. There are so many other kid-friendly activities in Costa Rica.
The problem is that for most kids, it is too scary and they do not know enough to even enjoy themselves (we've seen reviews of other companies where a 7 year old screamed and cried through the experience.)
Reservation Policy: Adventure tours such as whitewater rafting, canyoneering, kayaking and hiking require physical effort. Clients should be in good condition. For client safety and enjoyment, Desafio Adventure Company reserves the right to offer a substitution, postpone, change or cancel any tour due to unfavorable conditions. Full refund is given if (on rare occasion) a tour is cancelled. Desafío and its affiliates are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items.
